Prague Zoo

Prague Zoo, founded In 1931, has been named as one of the best zoos in the world for many reasons. It has gone far beyond the original concept in its early days.

In many cases, tourists do not consider a visit to the zoo as an essential part of their itinerary. This should not be the case during your visit to Prague. With 650 species and a total of 5000 animals, it is worth the four or five hours it takes to tour the zoo. It is set outside the city center, but is easily accessible from all areas of Prague. Whether your passion is penguins, elephants, or the graceful Ibex, the beautiful mountain enclosures will please you. Not only are the animals an obvious attraction, but also the beauty of the countryside makes the visit worthwhile.

The Prague Zoo is located near the Trója Chateau in Prague 7 and is open year round. It was ranked as no. 7 on Forbes Traveler Magazine's World's Best Zoos list in 2007 and is definitely worth a visit if you have the time. You can easily spend a day there, especially if you take a river boat there and/or back (see Boat Rides), visit the Trója Chateau that's literally across the street, or the Prague Botanical Garden up on the hill nearby. The zoo has a number of fun little play areas for children, a petting zoo, a viewing train, and a short chair-lift that might be fun for older kids. There are also some slot machines, where kids can buy low calories granules and feed their favourite animals.

Be sure to take a look at the “Don’t miss” section, where you can find a timetable of the most important events that take place in the ZOO during the day.

One of the most appreciated pavilions are the Indonesian Jungle and the Monkey Island where you can have a look at the luxuriant flora and fauna of the jungle or practically play with the cute lemurs. Another place that your kinds will definitely love is the Children Area and the Children ZOO, a special built farm, where kids are allowed to enter some enclosures and play with different domesticated animals (rabbits, sheep, pigs, ponies, hens, ducks, geese).
