A recurring element of Over het IJ Festival is the Sea container project. The special, unexpected and exciting sites play a central role in the programme of Over het IJ Festival. These different locations are to be found around the former NDSM shipyard, in the different neighbourhoods of Amsterdam-North, at the Tolhuistuin and at the Amsterdam Central Station.

The NDSM wharf in Amsterdam-Noord is the main venue for Over het IJ Festival. This site is easily accessible by foot, bicycle, public transport and car. The free NDSM ferry transports festival visitors in ten minutes from Amsterdam Central Station to the festival site. The ferry departs from the jetties on the north side of Amsterdam Central Station in the direction of the NDSM wharf.

Sea container project

For eleven days you can enjoy the work of new theatre makers but also renowned theatre makers who have undertaken the challenge to make their first site-specific theatre performance. Let yourself be drawn into a bombastic dance experience by Anouk van Dijk, dive in the dark-coloured world of Sarah Kane at Thibaud Delpeut’s performance, or sleep over at a thrilling location where the performance Sweet Dreams of Alexandra Broeder will be performed. Naturally Over het IJ Festival offers plenty of space to new talents like Eline Kuppens, who will take you on a stunning trip with her contemporary version of Bonnie & Clyde or you can stumble upon Tarantino-like action brought to you by the Young Gangsters.

This year once again the successful sea container programme is the indispensable entrance gate to the festival grounds on the former NDSM-shipyard. In several sea containers of 15m3, graduates from different performing arts schools in Holland give 15minutes performances in which they guide you into their world of imagination, dreams, fascinations, confrontations and the joy of creation.
